Waking lions / Ayelet Gundar-Goshen ; translated from the Hebrew by Sondra Silverston.

Summary:

Neurosurgeon Eitan Green has a good life - the father of two young boys and married to a beautiful police detective. Then, speeding along a deserted moonlit road in his SUV after an exhausting hospital shift, he hits someone. He can see that the victim, an African migrant, can't be saved - and surely his own family shouldn't have their lives ruined by such a careless blunder. He gets back in his car and drives away. But the next day, the victim's widow shows up at Eitan's door and reveals that she knows what happened. Her silence has a price, but what she's after isn't money - it's something else entirely, a penance that will shatter Eitan's safe existence and take him into a world of secrets and lies he could never have imagined. Then, just as he begins to hope that he can atone for his crime, his wife announces that the police have arrested a suspect for that mysterious hit-and-run she's been investigating - and they've just obtained a confession. Bold, suspenseful, and written with great psychological acuity, Waking Lions is a morally devastating drama of guilt and survival, shame and desire, that forces each of us to confront the very best and worst that we are capable of. --Dust jacket flap.
